Goodison and Dempsey in the medals at Skandia Sail for Gold

Top performances from Team Volvo for life's athletes helped the British team enjoy a successful week at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

Skandia Sail for Gold Paul Goodison

Paul Goodison gained six top five places, including two wins to go into today's medal race 8 points behind Tom Slinsgby, a penalty in that race however meant it was the Australian double world champion who walked away with the gold this time. 'I don’t think you’re ever really happy with coming second,' said a disappointed Goodison. 'It’s all about winning and for me that’s where I want to be having won the Worlds last year and the Olympics a couple of years before. I obviously want to try and win here in Weymouth with 2012 being the main goal.'

'Tom has sailed really well this week, you can’t put that past him. He got pretty lucky to get away with being over the line earlier this week and if it hadn’t been for that then things would’ve been the opposite way round today and then hopefully it would’ve been me dishing out the pain but unfortunately that wasn’t so we’ll just look forward now to the Worlds in two weeks’ time.'

RS: X Windsufer Nick Dempsey was in fine form all week, with 5 top three places including two wins to secure the bronze medal. " The week has been brilliant, I am really happy with how I sailed all week, I could have won the regatta and I didn't so it's a little dissapointing but the winning is for next year!"

Skandia Sail for Gold 2010 Ben Ainslie

In his much publicised return to the Finn class, triple Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie was unlucky only to finish in 4th place after an excellent week in a highly competitive field. “It took me the first race to get my technique back but the second went really well and I passed by some of the top guys to finish fourth so was pleased.”

Elsewhere Helena Lucas finished 7th in the 2.4mr class, while Sarah Ayton and Saskia Clark in the 470 class finished 14th.
