Fantastic result in Miami
The Rolex Miami OCR, the second leg of the 2010-11 ISAF Sailing World Cup series wrapped up this weekend with a fantastic result for the Team Volvo for life Guys.
The Skandia GBR sailing team dominated the waters in Miami, with the team walking away with 14 medals; four gold, five silver, and five bronze across nine of the 12 events they contested. The Team Volvo for life Guys Ben, Nick and Paul akk finished with podium finishes on Saturday with Ben and Nick taking away silver medals and Paul bronze. It was a clean sweep of the podium spots for the British team in the Finn class with Ben's team mates Giles Scott one point ahead taking gold and Andrew Mills three points behind taking Bronze.
Held at Biscayne Bay, the sailors saw testing conditions during the week with no sign of the typical 'light wind' Miami sailing conditions “It was probably the windiest Miami I have done, the usual 6-8 knot breeze replaced with a shifty 15 knots, and a bit of gear failure on day one meant my regatta did not get off to a great start” says Helena who finished the Regatta in 7th place overall.

It was close in the RS:X class with Nick just missing out on a gold medal on the final day to Dutchman Dorien van Rijsselberge “After a very close medal race I finished 2nd. I’m very happy with how things have gone this week and looking forward to the rest of the year. I’m off to Brazil tomorrow for three more weeks training and the Buzios International Regatta. For now it’s time for a few days break.” Nick took an early lead from the start and remained strong throughout the Regatta finishing overall in second place.

After a few weeks out of the Laser, Paul was back with a strong, consistent week of sailing. However, his week took a turn on Thursday when he was disqualified from the first race of the Laser fleet for not taking penalty turns after being yellow flagged by the jury- after not hearing their signals. “A little bit frustrated with the result but pretty pleased with how I sailed all week. Just a few creases to iron out… It’s now off to Mexico in the morning for a two week training camp; I’m really looking forwarded to a new venue I have never been before” says Paul.

The 470 Girls showed some great downwind sailing during the week and headed into Saturday’s medal race in ninth place, finishing the Regatta in tenth “We didn't do ourselves any favours yesterday [Friday] but we made it into the medal race. With not much to gain or lose on the positions we gave ourselves some space on the race course and sailed a confident medal race & have ended the Miami OCR in 10th. We are disappointed with this week’s result, but back to training...” says Saskia.
